Los Angeles Battles Unprecedented High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of significant rainfall that led to inundation across sections of the city, Los Angeles is now grappling with unseasonably warm weather for the end of February.
All-Time High Heat
During the day Friday, the mercury soared to 91°F (33°C) in the city center, per data from meteorologists. This exceeds the old record for February 27th, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was established just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on official graphics for the region.
Safety Alerts
Forecasters issued a warning that Friday's weather posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their advice suggested:
- Staying hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat arrives just after a powerful storm system that struck the area earlier in the week. That storm delivered heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for many residents.
Tragically, the conditions also triggered a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Weekend Outlook
The outlook suggests a cooldown will arrive. Readings were forecast to decrease to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in central Los Angeles by overnight.
Several cities that hit 90°F were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the upper eighties.
Over Saturday and Sunday, central LA can see readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures likely for the week ahead.
