Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.
PSG has now won the prestigious trophy on fourteen different times.
The Parisian giants needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.
The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net in the opening stages.
Yet, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.
In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to send the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.
From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to complete a convincing shootout win.
Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
